Abstract

The care of critically ill patients and relatives present particularities related to the complexity of disease processes and/or organic dysfunction. This particularities demand the development of specialized skills. Regarding this subject, and associated to the Nursing Mastery for the Medical-Surgical Specialization of the Portuguese Catholic University, this report was submitted to describe and analyze the knowledge and skills acquired for the treatment of critically ill patients and relatives. Three internships were performed regarding the main steps for the approach of these complex patients: prehospital emergency care (INEM), intrahospital emergency care and intensive care unit in Pedro Hispano Hospital. This report describes and evaluates the activities performed, stressing professional aspects related to management skills, communication skills, evidence-based practices and infection control and prevention. This analysis allows acquisition and development of abilities related to the domains defined by the Nurses College. Thoughtful comprehension of this practices consents awareness of several problems related to professional activities and to the difficulties experienced in the care of critically ill patients and relatives, from different perspectives, which shall improve the level of care provided and humanize the complex relation with the patient and relatives.
