Abstract

This internship report is done in the context of Master Degree course, with specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing. This is based on the experiences lived in the internship realized in Intensive Care Unit and in the Infection Control Commission of Hospital Center Entre Douro and Vouga – Hospital São Sebastião. The present report reflects everything that was learned and experienced during the internship. The internship allowed me to develop knowledge and abilities inherent to health care providing to critical ill patients and/or in multi organ failure. It also allowed me to develop new skills that become easier the decision making stimulating the autonomy in professional activity, as specialized nurse in Medical-Surgical Nursing. The module realized in the Intensive Care Unit allowed me to realize a global integration, having developed the decision making capacity. This module stimulated the development of more autonomy, which allowed me to acquire knowledge in invasive mechanic ventilation, hemofiltration techniques and invasive monitoring. In management area I developed skills that allow me to manage efficiently human resources, materials and therapeutic protocols. In the Hospital infection Control module this allowed me to understand better the functions of the nurse in the Infection Control Commission, which are the control and prevention of infections associated to the health cares and the promotion of good practices. The realization of this internship was profitable, because they allowed me to develop professional skills and knowledge, discover different realities, and acquire new skills in Medical-Surgical Nursing area.
