The completion of the report comes as part of the Master-Degree in Nursing with Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing, showing the direction followed in the Training in Polyvalent Intensive Care Unit and the Infection Control Committee of the Hospital of Braga. The activities developed during this training contributed to the acquisition, development and recognition of technical, human and scientific skills for the assistance to the sick adults and elderly experiencing processes of critical illness and/or organ failure, and for the intervention in the prevention and control of infection in the hospital. This report aims to describe the course taken during the training in the form of activities in identifying problems and developing the respective solutions as well as to reflect and critically analyze them, basing them on bibliographical support. The methodology used is descriptive and critical-analysis reflective of the developed activities. Concerning the structure, we have the inherent activities developed for each specific goal/competency outlined by the course plan in reply to achieving them which therefore, support the acquisition/development of skills in this area of knowledge. The skills acquired are also framed in the various fields of competence of the specialist nurse recommended by the Order of Nurses. The speed with which the information and technology is produced in the healthcare area requires a constant updating of knowledge by the nurse so that their practice is supported by the best evidence. Supervising and acting in situations of clinical worsening of the patient in critical condition, mastering techniques and sophisticated equipment, and simultaneously participating in projects to improve the practices were very common. The action in the prevention and control of infection maintain a safe and quality practice. The elaboration of normative procedures for implementing a service in the hospital and the audits clinics done in the area are examples of activities that allowed substantiate the acquisition / development of the skills. Holistically, the reflection on the activities developed allowed the acquisition of knowledge that support autonomous and independent decisions in the professional practice, therefore giving support to the skills profile recommended for the specialist nurse in Medical-Surgical Nursing.
