Abstract

This clinical practice report comes within the framework of the Master’s degree in Nursing with Specialization in Child Health and Paediatrics Nursing, from the Institute of Health Sciences of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. It presents and systematizes the work accomplished in the Curricular Unit “Final Internship and Report”, which involved the development and acquisition of the skills for the provision of specialized care which are demanded of the Specialized Nurse Practitioner. In the current document, I provide an overview of the work developed during the internship, which covered the contexts of assistance in paediatric emergency care, assistance in neonatology and assistance in paediatric internment, and led to the acquisition of the required skills for the provision of specialized nursing care in the area of Child Health and Paediatrics. The organization of this report is based on the grouping of the Specialized Nurse Practitioner’s skills in four working areas: provision of care, management, training and research. For each of these working areas, I have defined the specific goals outlined, the activities developed to achieve them and a critical reflection, which aims to substantiate and convey the importance of the lessons learned for the acquisition of scientific, technical and human skills for the provision, management, training and research of specialized nursing care to newborn/ children/ young people and their families. It should be noted that, throughout this process, I have given special attention to the need to promote continuity of care, since the contact with such different care contexts created the possibility to reflect on this theme. The mobilisation of the knowledge acquired in the course of my personal and professional journey and during this internship, supported by the critical analysis and reflection carried out with the help of systematic literature search, allowed the acquisition of the knowledge, abilities and skills inherent in the provision of specialized nursing care in the area of Child Health and Paediatrics.
