Abstract

This document was drawn up within the scope of the Course Unit of Final Internship and Report, for the Master’s Degree in Nursing, specializing in Paediatric and Child Health Nursing, in the Institute of Science and Health, of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Children, considering their characteristics, have different nursing care needs, in accordance with their health condition, be it healthy or ill, their stage of development and their culture. Hence, it is expected that the Specialist Nurse in Paediatric and Child Health Nursing, with a Master’s Degree in Nursing, retains profound updated knowledge about their growth, development and health-sickness process, skills which make it possible to integrate differentiated techniques into their daily practice, simultaneously guaranteeing critical and reflective thinking, and qualifications to provide holistic care, centred around the combination child/family, considering their needs and desires, showing sensitivity towards habits and routines, in an efficient care partnership. This report aims to organize the learning and experiences achieved, describing the activities accomplished throughout this training course, in a critical, reflective way, based on the most recent scientific evidence, thus meeting the outlined objectives, and leading to the development of an advanced level of competence in nursing as foreseen in the Course study programme. It builds up around the assistance to the child, the youth, and the family, maximizing their health, integrating the care for the child, the youth, and the family in situations of specific complexity and the provision of specific care in accordance with the needs of the life cycle and development of the child and the youth. Nevertheless, by facing the challenges derived from the current children health situation, resulting from an increase in morbidity, from complex chronic disorder and from a greater risk of child developmental delay, this report emphasizes the communication, the partnership of care providing, and the adaptation of children, youth, and families to chronic disease. This document discloses the strengthening of specialized competencies resulting from the harmony between professional and personal experience, the care procedures carried out during the internship and the knowledge acquired in the academy sustained by the current scientific evidence, showing the interconnection of Nursing as a Career and a Scientific Subject.
