Abstract

This report was carried out within the scope of the 14th Master's Course in Nursing with Specialization in Child and Pediatrics Health, held at the School of Nursing at the Institute of Health Sciences, of Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Porto campus, and refers to the Final Internship and Report, with a total of 750 hours. The internship took place between September 6, 2021 and December 18, 2021, in Primary Health Care settings, in a Community Care Unit with passage through a Family Health Unit, and in Specialized Health Care settings, in a Pediatric Emergency Department and in a Neonatology Department, with a total of 90 contact hours in each setting. The main objective of this report was to analyze, in a reasoned way, the process of acquisition and development of competencies of the Nurse Specialist in Child Health and Pediatrics. The methodology used was the description of activities and reflection on them, taking into account the scientific evidence and also the mobilization of knowledge. The competencies were divided into four domains: care provision, management, training and research, following the recommendations of the study plan. In each domain, the specific objectives were identified, the activities developed were explained, and a critical analysis was performed, reflecting the path developed throughout the internship. It is concluded that the relevance of this internship in Child Health and Paediatrics contributed positively to the development and improvement of specialized skills to children of different age groups and their families based on the care partnership model, with special attention to the promotion of child development and parenting, the adequate and effective communication with the child and family and the minimization of the impact of hospitalization. The efficient integration in the teams provided opportune and enriching learning moments in the four domains of action of the Nurse Specialist.
