Abstract

This Internship Report within the scope of the acquisition of a Masters in Nursing with Specialization in Medical-Surgical nursing, in health sciences institute at Universidade Católica Portuguesa, illustrates the route taken during the internship to acquire the skills needed for the aforementioned specialization. I describe and reflect on the route taken to develop the skills that make up the profile of a nurse specialist in medicine-surgical, directed to the requirements of the critical patient and his family. The Internship was completed at the National Institute of Emergency Medicine and the Intensive Care Unit from 6 september 2021 to 18 december 2022. This document comprises of five chapters: Introduction; Internship of the curricular unit: the person in the critical situation and their family: surveillance and clinical decision; Internship of the curricular unit: final stage and report - description of the places of the internship; Specialized Nursing: Development of competence and Conclusion. These chapters have the following objectives: to describe the location of the internship and the stages of the apprenticeship as a Nurse Specialist in Medical-Surgical; to carry out a reflective analysis of critical experiences in the context of clinical practice and describe the objectives that it proposes to achieve; and finally, in the conclusion, highlighting professional development based on acquired skills. For its elaboration, bibliographic research was carried out using a reflective methodology and written research with reference to the APA standard. The acquisition of competence as a specialist nurse was a gradual process, throughout the master's degree, with the development of competence from an ethical, moral, social and technical perspective, based on the assumptions that guide the nursing profession, in the approach to the critically ill patient. The work developed reflects the deepening of the aspects and contributions considered relevant, such as the realization of an article on the impact of suicide on the mental health of professionals in the pre-hospital setting, with the objective of reflecting on the importance of taking care of mental health and a reflection evidence-based practice on the use of emergency services by non-urgent users. Nurses specializing in medical-surgical care for critically ill patients have a fundamental role in the practice of quality care, both because of the in-depth knowledge they have in the area of specialization in the health of critical patients and because of the specific skills they have that allow them to be aware of their individual needs, revealing the best of themselves and becoming, therefore, a specialized nurse.
