Abstract

Children should be assisted by nurses who have in-depth knowledge of their development and the health and disease processes that affect them, competent in providing holistic care focused on the child and family, while being sensitive to their rights, needs and wishes, in an effective partnership of care. This report aims to reflect the formative path of acquisition, development and integration of knowledge and specialized skills for advanced nursing care to children, within the scope of the Master of Nursing course with specialization in Paediatric and Childcare Nursing at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Through a descriptive and critical-reflexive methodology, based on a robust theoretic grounding, the various activities developed in a practicum carried out in a hospital ward and primary health care settings are addressed, which achieved the specific objectives outlined to develop the required skills. These were grouped into four areas of action that complement each other: Provision of care, Management, Education and Research. Several areas of the field of action of the Specialist Nurse in Paediatric and Childcare Nursing were worked on and analyzed, such as communication with the child / family binomial; specialized assistance in situations of special complexity; pain management; parenting and care partnership promotion; child and youth health surveillance; promoting school inclusion of children with special health needs; among others. The role of the specialist in the management of care and resources, continuous personal and professional training and the peer group was also discussed, as well as a promoter of research processes for the exercise of an evidence-based practice, in the search for excellence in care. With this work, the proposed objectives were achieved, and it was possible to successfully develop the skills foreseen in the master’s study cycle. This report also refers to the implications of this training path for the professional practice.
