Abstract

The following report was written in scope of the curricular unit Final Internship and Report, which is part of the master’s course in nursing with specialization in Children Health and Pediatric at the Institute of Health Sciences of Universidade Católica Portuguesa, in Porto. Considering the goal to develop differentiated and specific skills and knowledge to obtain the master’s degree in nursing, this internship took place in clinical contexts in the fields of Child and Pediatric Health. This report’s purpose is to describe, in a critical-reflexive and justified way, the path taken during the internship, and the skills and knowledge acquisition processes to become pediatric and childcare nurse specialist. This report describes the activities developed under three assistance contexts where I was able to assist newborn, children, adolescent, and their families which were: Neonatology, pediatric emergency department and the Primary Health Care. The acquired skills are divided in four domains of nursing practice, that complement each other: care provision, management, training, and research. In each of these domains, skills, specific goals, and the developed activities were listed. Adding to this, there is a critical reflection where I write about my experiences during the internship. In this path, I acquired and applied knowledge that allowed me to improve my problem-solving capabilities and my ability to make decisions based on scientific evidence. During the internship, I had the opportunity to work and reflect about several areas of the field of action of the pediatric and childcare nurse specialist such as: effective communication with the child and the family, contributing with specialized assistance to enhance the child’s health during the whole development phase; the specialized assistance in situations of special complexity and child and youth health surveillance, among others. Throughout the journey, my guidelines were partnership care, parenting promotion, pain management, atraumatic care and promotion of child and family health and well-being. I also understood the role of the Specialist Nurse in resource and care management, in the personal and professional training and the importance of promoting research to have evidence-based practice and promote excellence of care. I believe that internship and the report development contributed for my professional growth and to acquire the necessary competences to obtain the master’s degree in nursing with specialization in Children Health and Pediatric.
