Abstract

The multiplicity of influences to which a child and his family are subjected to throughout their life cycle, sometimes making them vulnerable in their health, determines that the Nurses who care for them must detain a profile of specific competencies that gives them the ability to act within the Infant Health and Pediatric Specialist Nurse area. The present report arises following the search for this profile of specific competencies through the Master’s Course in Nursing at the Institute of Health Sciences at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa – Porto with a specialization in Child and Pediatric Health. This document aims to present the followed path to fulfill the objectives and competencies proposed by the curricular unit Final Internship and Report carried out in the context of neonatal intensive care, pediatric emergency service and primary health care. The competencies to be developed throughout the internship were organized according to the four domains of competencies that emerged from the study plan of the Master’s Course, specifically Provision of Care, Management of Care, Training and Research. This document contains a critical-reflexive reflection of all the activities carried out to achieve the proposed objectives, always linked to scientific evidence. Areas of particular attention were communication with the child and family, situations of special complexity, care centered on development, promotion of health, monitoring of the child and the youth development and promotion of the parental role, while considering at all times the transition processes that children and families were experiencing. The indisputable role of the nurse in areas like training, management and research was also valued. This journey allowed me to acquire skills within the scope of action of a Nurse with a Specialization in Child and Pediatric Health.
