Abstract

This report intends to describe, analyse and reflect about the activities developed in the Community Intervention Training, Module III of the Master’s Course in the area of specialization in Community Nursing that took place in the Community Care Unit of Senhora da Hora. The selected area to dynamize this Training was the area of oral health that is part of the National Program of Oral Health Promotion, since the dental caries was identified as a priority problem to be solved. And having into consideration the importance of the nurse’s role in the education for health in order to promote and maintain children and other school community members’ oral health, in the acquisition of oral health knowledge, awareness for the problem and motivation for the acquisition of healthy habits, an intervention project was implemented to a sample of 160 students with an age range of six years old and attending the 1st grade of the primary school of Senhora da Hora Group of Schools. This project aimed to improve the knowledge and behaviours about eating and oral hygiene in the school community, diminish the incidence of dental caries, reduce its prevalence and promote the guiding of the children with special health needs to the specialty consultation. After the intervention we can conclude that from the 160 evaluated students, in the classification of the risk to develop dental caries, 67% of the students show High Risk, 62% of them refer high ingestion of cariogenic food and only 46% of the students brush their teeth twice a day. The initial goals were overcome. We got an adhesion of 100% to the fluoride mouthwash; the rate of students with learned capacities concerning the technique of tooth brushing was 96%; the rate of evaluated children under the risk of dental caries and cpod/CPOD index was 96% and the rate of children guided to caries treatment was 100%, which shows the adhesion of the target group to the project through the participation of the children during the sessions as well as a true participation of the teachers in the dissemination and integration of the project in the curriculum. The evaluation has not finished with our participation in this project as it will be continued by a school health team so as to evaluate the profits in what concerns health in the long run
