Abstract

All research tends to achieve a concrete objective, through a well-designed and structured method. Therefore, our investigation proposes to analyze and deepen a very relevant theme throughout the history of humanity: religion and freedom. From the vision of Donoso Cortés, a Spanish philosopher and diplomat who lived in the 19th century, a converted Catholic and a philanthropist, we will have the audacity to dive into this deep sea that is the theme of religion and freedom. We are used to understanding in the current context the existence of a contrast between religion and freedom, that is, they seem to be two antagonistic realities. A careful reading of the writings of Donoso Cortés led us to a new understanding of this indissoluble relationship. This relationship between religion and freedom intends to be at the same time the possibility of establishing a relationship between political philosophy and theology. In short, as he himself says, it is admirable to see how in all our political questions we always stumble with theology. In this sense, it is noticeable that it is essential to understand this relationship to illuminate reflection and debate within political philosophy. According to Donoso Cortés, religion is the indestructible foundation of human societies and no society was ever constituted without the existence of a religion, so religion is an essential reality for man. Freedom, in turn, consists in carrying out the will of God. The interaction between both concepts within the author's thought will lead us to illuminate this theme and the debate within political philosophy.
