Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease the treatment of which requires an active role by the patient to control the disease. This research has as main objective to characterize a sample of clients with Type II diabetes, the level of illness representations, knowledge and self-care, exploring the differences between the controlled and uncontrolled diabetic. This is an observational, cross-sectional comparative analysis. The sample consisted of 140 users of a health center ARS North. The results obtained in the comparison between controlled and uncontrolled diabetic there are significant associations between most subscales of the IPQ with knowledge about the disease. It was also found significant differences in the dimensions of the most IPQ knowledge and self-care. These data point towards different interventions for diabetes controlled and uncontrolled diabetics.
