The goal of this report is to examine the risk factors related with the occurrence of damage and its associated costs, within the branch of the medical liability. The work developed results from an internship at AXA Portugal, at the Property Damage Management department. The data regarding this subject was collected in September and November 2012, and analyzed during the following months until January 2013. To determine the costs associated with medical liability contract, calculations were made taking into consideration the likelihood of a damage occurring, either resulting in company costs, either by the expected cost associated with the damage. That probability was calculated based on the number of damages, number of insurance contracts and how frequently they were made, being broken down by year and by medical specialty. From the set of considered variables, two were selected in order to perform the analysis regarding the expected cost associated with each damage: gender of the insured person and medical specialty in which the damages occurred. From using these two variables in a linear regression, the results suggest that there will be homogeneous groups among which the costs between their specialties don’t differ. However, if we consider specialties from different groups, we verify that this disparity happens. In the following step of the analysis, it was taken the option to distribute the specialties by three big groups, using the cost values of each specialty as the main criteria. Applying a linear regression to these three groups, it was verified that the costs were, in fact, different between them. In conclusion, this analysis enabled us to identify the values of the expected costs associated to each insurance contract in terms of gender and medical specialty.
