Disasters, regardless of their nature, result into processes of disruption and social chaos that showwhether society is prepared for natural and technological risks, which determines the importance of nursingprofessional’s specific education/training to intervene in a competent way in disaster situation. Nurses, besides being the largest professional and scientific community responsible for the health systemoperational functioning, is part of the multidisciplinary teams that assist the victims that contribute to preventthe increase in the number of victims, the deterioration of their health and the vulnerability of populations. However, education in disaster field in the undergraduate Nursing programs are still incipient and hasreduced visibility in the current national training framework. From this perspective, the aim of this study is to identify the contribution of nursing schools in thedevelopment of professional skills in nursing students in the field of disaster; identify whether the participantsconsider that the syllabus confers students the skills needed to act effectively and efficiently in a disastersituation; identify from the core competencies, defined by the Tuning Educational Structures in Europe –Fase I (2003) project, which are considered essential for a competent professional and human performanceof the general care nurse within the disaster field and identify the constraints (academic and professional)in the introduction of disaster-related contents in the undergraduate nursing curriculum .The course was based within the research methodology essentially qualitative, using methods tospecifically support the data collection phase, attended by Technical-Scientific Council Chair NursingTeachers or Coordinators/Directors of Nursing Degree Courses, using the strategy of semi-structuredinterviews and expert nurses in the field of disaster using the focus group research technique. The resultsshow that education within the field of disaster should be included, as a space in Nursing Education, throughstrategies and methodologies that enhances improving capacity building and widening nursing student'sown and distinct competencies for disaster responses. It is in this axiomatic view that the evidence demonstrates the increasing responsibility of NursingSchools, in raising awareness and preparing students for an effective intervention in the field of disaster, isundeniable by introducing this subject area into educational undergraduate nursing educational programs, allowing the development of various conceptual and operative competences of nursing students in thisdomain.
