The rural heritage is characterized by spaces featuring abundant wealth and diversity of architectural elements with symbolic culture, heritage and identity for its population. This is due to the accumulation of various natural conditions, mainly topographic , which were used to create these anonymous developments that were organized on the ground, which were mixed and overlapped, featuring these rural areas. Vernacular architectural elements that were required over time, for agriculture and pastoralism, which are currently abandoned or underutilized but are well planted in the rural areas, giving it high symbolism before the current society. Despite all these aspects, the rural areas have been losing a large number of inhabitants, due to the large exodus of rural populations in search of better living conditions. The traineeship in rehabilitation is developed in the initiative level of Terra Amada, an initiative that in the first edition, in 2013, took place in the village of Covas do Monte, a shale village nestled in the hills of S. Macário in S. Pedro do Sul, and which Was a sucess thanks to the effots of 50 volunteers, the generosity of more than 50 companies and the goodwill of the local population. Interventions made in this space created a unity in the community, as well as it facilitated the communication between different age groups throughout the process. This year, the Terra Amada’s initiative took place in the village of Vale de Papas located in Serra de Montemuro in the Parish of Ramires at the Council of Cinfães. The proposed initiatives for this year were: the allocation of the whole village of basic infrastructure (piped water), improving the conditions of two dwellings with the (installation of toilet and sanitation], conversion of three barns housing/workshop, conservation and restoration of elements of the existing architectural heritage (mill, forge, threshing, etc.) as well as the allocation of conservation and development structures of economic activity (cheese factory, granaries) and the improvement of public space. This traineeship had as an object the rehabilitation and reuse of three buildings that will store an artisan cheese factory, but that will combine a factor of innovation: use research developed at the Catholic University of Viseu, in the Department of Biomedical of Sciences, and the Agricultural School of Polytechnic Institute of Viseu, relative to the Processes of coagulation of milk with thistle, from a local production, manufacture a differentiated product. This traineeship will consist of both the development of this project [from Conception to licensing and certification] as well as the planning, direction and monitoring of the work. Also included within the scope of this traineeship is the reconstruction of a traditional granary, in granite, wood and thatch, which recently collapsed, standing only on its granite base. It was intended for its full reconstruction, which included the lifting and design of every wood piece which formed it, its manufacture and its replacement on site, as well as the making of a thatched roof.
