This dissertation consists in the development of a rehabilitation project of Galerias Ecovil, a building from the 70’s that has generated a great discussion due to its lack of relation with the place it occupies: Viseu’s Historic Center. It’s privileged location results from the ancient implementation polygon of a XIX century building that, due to a gigantic fire, eventually disappeared. Even so, despite the well adjustment of the old building compared with it’s site, the Galerias Ecovil turns out to be completely out of place. In addition to the case study’s lack of architectural and constructive quality, and in the last few years, the progressive failure of the place’s functionality has been an evidence, due to the insufficient adaptation to it’s user’s needs and, more worrying, to the progressive disinterest that is happening in relation to the Historic Center. As such, the project proposes a multiple scale program, socially, economically and culturally, so that it answers to the lot of problems that has been occurring in Galerias Ecovil since it was built, and it finds solutions that can handle and improve the lack of interest from the Historic Center, using its neighbour’s potentials: the Mercado 2 de Maio, as such the case study, has been losing its function and purpose for these days.
