Abstract

The nursing profession has evolved in the last decades and there is a need to respond to the challenges that arise while the goal of the nurse is to acquire knowledge through continuous training and the development of skills and personal competences that will allow autonomy, responsibility, effectiveness and security in decision. Making and by developing critical and reflected thinking in practice context, looking for a continuous improvement of professional practice so that the patient may be offered quality health care. This made it necessary to attend the Medical-Surgical Nursing Specialization Course of Health Science Institute, ministered by Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Centro Regional das Beiras. Skills acquisition requires the mobilization of several resources, some of which were acquired during the period of theoretical and theoretical-practical training, making it an essential link between theoretical knowledge and practical skills. From the true Modules of training integrated in the curricular plan of the course we performed two that were equivalent to Module III (optional). The training in Module II was performed in Coronary Intensive Care Unit of Hospital São Teotónio in Viseu – EPE in period between the 26th April and 26 June 2010 and with a total workload of 180 hours (one hundred and eighty hours). The Module I training was performed in Emergency Service, at the same Hospital in the period between the 4th October and 30th November and the same workload hours. The main purpose of this report is to summarize the whole learning process conducted in a practical context and it is intended to provide future memory for this journey. When performing both trainings, some unpredictable and complex situations took place bet they are considered valuable as they allowed the acquisition of new skills, the improvement of technical skills and the adequate decision taking. The methodology used is descriptive and it promotes a reflective analysis of the activities in order to achieve the objectives
