Abstract

With this reflexive and theoretically grounded work we intend, in a succinctly way, to present a summary of what were the most important events which occurred during our career, giving more emphasis to the last ten school years. Being a teacher today is to be a competent reflective professional and to be constantly acquiring training. Teachers’ role has changed and it is no longer confined to the classroom, teaching the cognitive domain as it was in the past, but it is required other functions that a school open to everyone (inclusive school) and new management models require. Currently, teachers, besides teaching, participate in meetings, seminars, develop and participate in projects, are called to perform administrative functions, supervise curriculum enrichment activities and they make the link between school and the family. On this work it is made an approach, focusing the concept of school as an institution, organization and social territory. It is stressed the several roles that are currently required to the teachers and their satisfaction or dissatisfaction towards the profession and towards school. The main professional development factors are also referred, as well as initial training, the importance of continuous training, assessment and career progression; identification and description of the main stages of the professional life - places, organizations, publics, main characteristics and challenges; selection and analysis of the most critical and striking professional incident, reporting a case, its theoretical grounding and professional importance; what we most learned in our professional career, the appropriation and use of the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) absent during initial training, have become a very important tool and a precious teaching auxiliary as well as a learning motivator, in school and in personal life. We also emphasize the constant changes experienced in schools, leading many teachers to attend continuous training, so that they can be constantly updated in what methods, techniques and contents are concerned. We also refer the fact that the teaching career, the stages of the professional life and the investment in the profession are not seen or experienced the same way by all the teachers and it is variable over the years. It is also discussed the need to restructure schools in order to accommodate all – inclusion; the importance of the coordination between school cycles, the importance of the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) as learning auxiliaries; the importance of the relationships between school and family, school and local authority (in this section we expose the enormous contribution and relationship between schools of the Oliveira de Frades Grouping and the local authority) and we also mention the importance of leadership and organizational development.
