Abstract

The subject of professional satisfaction has been the object of extensive investigation through the last decades. Seen as an attitude that can be verbalized and measured through opinions, it is an important indicator of organizational climate, related to quality and productivity in organizations. Based on a test sample of 57 nurses belonging to an Intensive Care Unit, this descriptive study has as its main aim to determine what factors contribute the most for the desired satisfaction, adapting a useful diagnostic tool, which allows a significant improvement in health care services, assuming that a satisfied person is more productive. To achieve this goal, we used the tool crated by Luis Graça (1999), A Satisfação Profissional dos Profissionais de Saúde nos Centros de Saúde, adapted to a population of hospital environment that determines the satisfaction based on a model of discrepancy between expectations and actual rewards of each worker. Relying on description and inferential statistics, it was concluded that the nurses that belong to the test sample are not particularly satisfied neither dissatisfied professionally, however, it is in relationship between satisfaction dimensions worker/patient relationship, work/social support, status & prestige that they are most pleased. In regards to social and demographic factors, it was concluded that age, years of service, marital status, academic achievements, and current employment status have the most influence in professional satisfaction. It was also concluded that nurses tend to manifest intentions in behavior such has turnover and absenteeism.
