Abstract

The specialist nurse is recognized for competences in the scientific, technical and human areas for the provision of specialized nursing care in each area of specialty. The internship report developed and presented here reports the path taken in the development of specialized skills during the Master's in Medical-Surgical Nursing taught by the Instituto de Ciências da Saúde da Univerisdade Católica Portuguesa. The growing complexity of health problems has motivated enormous challenges and demands on health organizations. In this sense, the quality of health care and patient safety have been recognized as determinants in the creation of health systems. On the other hand, healthcare-associated infections are also one of the most common adverse events in healthcare and have proved to be one of the biggest challenges today (World Health Organization, 2016). Bloodstream infections are part of healthcare-associated infections and it is assumed that peripheral venous catheters are relevant risk factors (Aghdassi, Schröder, Gruhl, Gastmeier & Salm, 2019). Phlebitis is one of the complications associated with the use of peripheral venous catheters and can be classified as a patient safety incident (Direção-Geral da Saúde, 2011). Nurses are fundamental in this topic, as they play a leading role in the prevention of adverse events and in the permanent search for excellence in health care (Ordem dos Enfermeiros, 2001). This motivated the need to study and investigate this topic: phlebitis as a patient safety incident in the management of peripheral venous catheters. The second chapter begins with a description of the path taken during the Curricular Unit “A Pessoa em Situação Crítica e Família – Vigilância e Decisão Clínica” and how this internship supported this path and the development of specialized skills. Next, the stages in the Curricular Unit “Estágio Final e Relatório” are described. In addition to the description, an analysis and reflection of the competence development process at each stage is carried out. To support this path, I resorted to the transformation paradigm, to the caring school of thought and I chose the Theory of human care, developed by Jean Watson (2010).
