Abstract

This report materializes the journey of acquiring and developing skills within the scope of the Master's program in Nursing with a specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing: Nursing for Individuals in Critical Situations. Its aim is to reflectively and critically describe the experiences lived and competencies developed in the internship context, namely, Hospital Infection Control, Patient Safety, and Intermediate Care Unit. This formative journey facilitated the acquisition and development of ethical-deontological, technical-scientific, and relational skills. These skills are grounded in the development of theoretical knowledge based on scientific evidence, applied to clinical practice in a reflective and critical manner, with the objective of constructing a new professional identity – Specialized Nurse. This new professional identity materializes in the provision of specialized nursing care to individuals in critical situations and their families, based on the quality standards of nursing care as identified by Ordem dos Enfermeiros. One of the foundational and essential components of healthcare quality is patient safety, as there can be no quality in healthcare services without ensuring safety in the provided healthcare. In this context, the clinical practice during the formative journey focused on the theme of patient safety and quality. This phase fostered evidence-based practice, with numerous instances of training and reflection on the state of the art in the nursing discipline, along with the execution of a systematic literature review. This formative trajectory, which aspired to differentiate and specialize nursing care, culminates in the acquisition and development of common and specific competencies of the Medical-Surgical Specialized Nurse. These competencies are rooted in reflective action and evidence-based practice, with the purpose of ensuring excellence in holistic care for Individuals in Critical Situations and their families.
