This hypothetical-deductive study aims to explore the role of physical safety and working conditions in the levels of occupational stress of cleaning professionals, during the period of confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic between March and May 2020, in Portugal. More specifically, we intend to understand whether there are significant differences in occupational stress levels between professionals working in formal and informal settings, as well as how the perception of working conditions - such as availability of PPE, physical safety at work and number of actual hours worked - affects the perceived levels of occupational stress. In this study 75 cleaning professionals with formal employment relationship and 25 cleaning professionals without formal employment relationship participated. Data were collected online and in-person through a questionnaire developed for this purpose. The results point to the relevance of the perception of physical safety at work as a predictor of occupational stress.
