Abstract

This report intends to reflect the long journey made in the different internship contexts, within the scope of the master’s in nursing with specialisation in the Medical Surgical in the area of the person in a critical condition for the acquisition of specialised competencies focusing on the safety of the person’s care in critical condition. The internship, which is part of the curricular unit “Final Internship and Report”, took place in two different contexts, first in the Cardiology Intensive Care Unit and the second in the Polyvalent Intensive Care Unit, units that allowed the development and mobilisation of skills and abilities to an evidence based practice, in order to acquire common and specific competencies from the specialist nurse in Medical Surgical Nursing to the person in a critical condition. In both units, it was possible to take care of the critically ill, always bearing in mind the safety culture allowing safe patient care and the prevention of infections. In order to explain about the development of competencies in this area, the introduction is framed, followed by a chapter referring to the acquisition of specialised competencies, as a condition to promote safety in the care of people in critical conditions. This one, structurally, was subdivided into three subchapters. The first describes the contribution of the internship carried out, in the first year of the master’s degree, in the polyvalent Emergency Service of the same hospital where the final internship was carried out. In the second subchapter, the contexts characterisation of the final stage is made, which is fundamental to frame all the technical, human, and advanced technology in this area of care. In the third subchapter, the description and reflective critical analysis of the objectives presented is made, developing common and specific specialised competencies in the aforementioned area. The internships and the reflexion on specialised interventions allowed for my personal and professional development, a valuable contribution to the safety and quality of care provided in the approach to critically ill patients towards excellent care.
