Abstract

Being a Specialist Nurse: conception, implementation and review is the title of this report and tells the work developed when specialised nursing care on medical surgical patients in a critical situation is applied. This report was written considering a critical-reflective methodology, aiming to auto evaluate the skills acquired during the learning process. Its essence is a detailed look on the provided care services to the medical-surgical patient, in the internships carried out in the intensive care units, looking forward to responding to their needs and their families, conceiving, implementing, and evaluating nursing diagnoses. I focused on previously defined objectives considering the four main areas of common skills shared with all the Nursing Specialities, considering the specific skills required by the specialist nurse in medical surgical nursing in the area critical situation, and the main objectives of the curricular unit. To intendent achieve academic skills a review of literature was made, considering both professional and personal concerns within the area of expertise and aiming to learn and update previous knowledge. The chosen subject area was inhalation therapy without aerosolization. Since the recognition of SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, this therapy became a regular practice in hospital environment, due to the aerosol dispersion and awakened the need to refine knowledge on this matter. The optimization when applying this procedure requires the most effective technique and use of all the inhalation equipment, which represents a big responsibility to all the nurses. It is important to acknowledge their major role in the education of their patients. Among all the benefits of this study I highlight the progress in questioning, investigating, and implementing intervention plans, in different contexts of action, pursuing excellence of care. I believe that the learning process will be the beginning of specialized care awareness, based on current, valid, and relevant knowledge. Continuous education is a key element to the professional development of nurses.
