Abstract

This report is part of the Master’s Degree in Nursing, specializing in MedicalSurgical Nursing: People in Critical Situations, at the Faculdade de Ciências da Saúde e Enfermagem from Universidade Católica Portuguesa, and illustrates the path I took in developing my skills at an academic, professional and personal level. “Being a Specialist Nurse: from conception to realization” reproduces the path I took in search of specialized nursing for people in critical situations. It aims to portray and explain, in a critical-reflective way, the process of acquiring and consolidating common and specific competences, contextualizing the internship sites and carrying out a description and analysis of the experiences and most significant learning of the internships in the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit. It is a detailed look at the care provided to patients, responding to their needs and those of their families, designing, implementing and evaluating nursing diagnoses and interventions. It is a dynamic process, narrated in the chapters that follow, revealing the reflections on advanced practices, the activities developed and the skills acquired. It identifies opportunities for improvement and the development of problemsolving strategies, based on theoretical support and critical reflection. Believing that understanding the origin, rationale and problematization of bathing throughout the ages will allow us to understand and face the challenges of the present in the prevention of Surgical Site Infection, “Nursing Intervention: Preoperative Bathing Focused on a Historical and Documentary” is a systematic review of the literature, including text and opinion evidence. Using the critical-reflective methodology, this report shows the academic path developed in the search for specialized and advanced, yet humanized care. It shares reflections on the path taken, the implications for professional practice and the main individual contributions.
