Abstract
This internship report is part of the “Final Internship and Report” curricular unit, which is part of the curriculum of the 17th Master's Degree in Nursing, specializing in Medical-Surgical Nursing, in the area of Nursing for People in Critical Situations, in Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Its purpose is to describe the experiences and learning from the activities carried out during the different internships. In addition, it is essential to demonstrate the skills acquired and document the learning acquired. Finally, bibliographical research was carried out in order to compare experiences with the latest evidence. This document is based on the use of a critical-reflective and descriptive methodology, using direct observation in the internship contexts as a method of analysis. It was also by recording the various experiences and activities developed in relation to the provision of care that theory was linked to practice. The first chapter explains and reflects on the internship carried out in the first year of this Master's course. The second chapter, in turn, is made up of three subchapters, which begin with a brief characterization of the clinical contexts in which the internship took place and, subsequently, a critical-reflective and reasoned analysis of the activities carried out in the acquisition and development of skills in the various contexts. Caring for people experiencing a set of complex critical illness processes, whether they are in an emergency department or an intensive care unit, implies streamlining responses to exceptional and catastrophic situations. In this way, maximizing intervention in infection prevention and control, as well as in the safety of the person, were some of the main skills acquired during this course. A series of improvement projects were also developed which helped to emphasize the role of the specialist nurse in promoting care practice. This report has contributed to a number of critical reflections on the impact of the Specialist Nurse's intervention in the provision of care, taking into account the fundamental role of humanizing care in the quality of care provided. All the objectives outlined were achieved, and this report records the journey of acquiring and developing skills.| Date of Award | 11 Jun 2025 |
