This dissertation sets out to explore the relationship between democracy and journalism, practised by digital alternative media in different democratic contexts and media systems, the Portuguese and the Swedish, identifying the roles and practices played by two projects, one from each country – Setenta e Quatro and Blankspot. The theoretical framework explores the democratic role of the media, Hallin and Mancini's (2004) typology of media systems, the evolution of journalistic activity, the roles of journalism and its relationship with democracy and journalism in a changing ecosystem, addressing digital journalism and alternative media, illustrating the constant transformation to which these concepts and practices are subject. Using a qualitative methodology, which articulates the case study and ethnographic approach (and triangulation of techniques, literature review, observation and interview), data collection and analysis is divided into three dimensions - 'media systems', 'journalism' and 'democracy'. The conclusion is that the similarities between the two projects predominate, which is justified by the existence of a dominant journalistic culture and the interconnected digital ecosystem across borders, although the distinctions between media systems also have an impact on journalism. In addition, alternative media enrich public and citizen life in both countries.
