This study is inserted in a broader project aimed at contributing to trajectories characterizations and meanings associated with substance abuse in young people. Is is intended to realize what is the family role in the psychoactive substance use in non-problematic users. To this end, we used a biographical methodology, using semi-structured in-deph interviews in a sample of 9 participantes gathered with a chain sampling (snowball). Based on the meanings that the participants attach to their family, the results showed that, in general, the family is perceived by the participants mostly as a protection factor. However, most of these includes within its meanings speech related as risk factors. It was concluded also that the family plays an important role in drug use, and it can act as an important dimension to the transition from a non-problematic use to problematic.
