Abstract

Intimate partner violence is a cross phenomenon with a negative impact in women´s physical and mental health. This study characterizes the impact of different types of abuse in intimate partner violence, in posttraumatic symptomatology stress disorder (PTSD), stress and social support. The study sample consists of 65 women, victims of intimate partner violence ho search care at the Portuguese Victims Support Association (APAV). The instruments administrated were: Socio Demographic Questionnaire; PTSD Symptom Scale: Self-Reported (PSS-SR); Conservation of Resources Evaluation Questionnaire (COR-E); Social Provisions Scale (SPS) and the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS2). The results indicate different types of abuse correlate. There are significant differences at PTSD symptomatology between victims and non-victims of sexual coercion. There are positive correlations between types of abuse, PTSD symptomatology, stress and negative correlations between types of abuse and social support. It is important to carry out prevention and psychological intervention strategies within the PTSD and the increase of resources and the development of studies for the implementation of legal measures to support the victim
