Research has shown the importance of social support in mental health in the elderly. This study aimed to study depressive symptoms and the perception of satisfaction with social support in institutionalized elderly. This is an observational cross-sectional study, analytical, with comparison groups, developed a valence of elderly, situated in the district of Braga, with a Private Institution of Social Solidarity. The sample consisted of 34 subjects (17 at home and 17 residents attending the day center). In assessing the study variables used the Scale of Satisfaction with Social Support (Ribeiro, 1999), Geriatric Depression Scale (Barreto, 2003) and also a sociodemographic questionnaire. The results show the absence of significant differences between groups in satisfaction with social support and depression. The study suggests that satisfaction with intimacy and social activities are associated with depression.
