Abstract
The present dissertation focuses on the promotion of equal pay for men and women in Portugal, namely on the existing national legal system concerning this matter and the pay transparency measures adopted. Although Portuguese legislation is fairly comprehensive and complete - with the principle of "equal work for equal pay" enshrined in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic and embodied in various provisions of the Labour Code – in reality, the gender paygap in Portugal remains high and the case law on this matter scarce. In this sense, this study will seek to address the difficulty in implementing the legislation and putting into effect the enshrined principle, analyzing in particular the Law no. 60/2018 of August 21 ("Equal Pay Law"). It will be examined the contribution of the aforementioned law to the fight against inequality, as well as an analysis of legislative instruments with similar purpose produced in other jurisdictions, namely, Spain and the United Kingdom.
