Abstract

The present report is included on a Master study plan in Nursing, Medical-Surgical Nursing specialization, lectured by Instituto de Ciências da Saúde - Universidade Católica Portuguesa. This report shows the main contributions of the Internship in the acquisition and development of specialized skills in Medical-Surgical Nursing in advanced nursing care to adult and elderly clients, particularly directed to the client in critical condition. The first internship carried out concerning the second module has occurred in a special surgical intensive care unit on a Hospital on the outskirts of Lisbon. The second module internship was carried out in the General Emergency Service in a Lisbon Hospital. Lastly the third module internship (optional) has occurred in a Hospital Infection Control Commission. With the purpose of providing new scientific data about the factors that influence sleep in the hospitalized client on an Intensive Care Unit as well as the measures to promote it, an integrative literature review was made. The results were released in a training service addressed to the multidisciplinary team of the special surgical intensive care unit and were very important in the specialized care giving to the client with traumatic brain injury hospitalized in observation room of the emergency service. At a later stage the results were the beginning of a project that is being developed in the special surgical intensive care unit named “Sleep and Rest in the Special Surgical Intensive Care Unit” and were presented and disclosed within Good Practices of the Nursing Directing of the same Hospital. This report has as primary purpose to document the learning and the activities developed in each one of the internships as a way to accomplish the purposes defined previously and think about problem situations in the clinic practice context and proper intervention.
