Abstract

The general aim of this study is to characterize the psychological impact of medically assisted procreation (PMA) on Portuguese couples, focusing on the stress associated with medically assisted procreation, anxiety and depression. Using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM), we investigated how the stress associated with PMA relates to anxiety and depression, considering the effect on the couple and their partner. A total of 159 couples from two PMA centers in the north of Portugal took part. Data was collected through the GIPPMA Pre-Treatment Protocol, using the Fertility Problems Inventory (FPI) and the Screening of In-Vitro Fertilization Treatments (SCREEN-IVF). The results showed that women have higher levels of stress, anxiety and depression compared to men. The APIM analysis revealed that the stress associated with women's PMA significantly influences men's anxiety, while the opposite is not true. It was also possible to see that the stress associated with PMA for both women and men does not significantly influence depression in their partner. It is concluded that interventions focused on the couple may be more effective in mitigating the adverse emotional effects of PMA.
