Teaching is considered a risky job since it can influence stress levels and, consequently, lead to a situation of burnout, if the use of adaptive coping strategies that help to overcome these obstacles, preventing diseases is not verified. In this sense, intending to contribute to a better understanding of this theme in the teaching population, in the context of higher education, this study aimed to 1) characterize the level of perceived stress; 2) identify the main sources of stress; 3) verify and characterize the occurrence of burnout; 4) identify coping strategies used in stress management; 5) explore the role of sociodemographic variables in the perception of stress, burnout and coping strategies, 6) identify possible correlations between coping strategies, stress and burnout, 7) explore the role of coping strategies in explaining stress levels and burnout and, 8) to see if there was a change in the perception of stress, burnout and in the coping strategies used, in the current context of the Covid-19 pandemic. A non-random convenience sample of 102 higher education teachers was used. which were applied the QSPES, the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory, the Portuguese Version of the Coping Job Scale and a sociodemographic questionnaire. The information collected was analyzed using SPSS, version 25. The results indicated that most teachers perceive high stress, with a more prominent level in the “distance” dimension from burnout, and lower values in the “exhaustion” dimension. The most used coping strategy is “confrontation strategies”, having verified the occurrence of correlations, positive and strong, between the coping strategies and the perceived level of stress and burnout. It was also possible to prove the role of coping strategies in explaining the levels of stress and burnout.
