Abstract
The following report was conducted as part of the curricular internship for the master’s program in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage. The loan of the sculptures of Santa Ana and S. Joaquim studied in this report stems from the agreement between the School of Arts and the Municipality of Vila do Conde. Up to the date of the start of the intervention, these sculptures were on display in the Chapel of S. Sebastião, situated within the Municipal Cemetery of the city. In addition to having a practical component where all conservation and restoration actions performed are described, the report that follows also includes the study and contextualization of the techniques used for the construction and polychromies of wooden sculptures in sacred art during the Portuguese Baroque period. Furthermore, within this study, the decorative techniques present in the two sculptures undergoing intervention were compared and identified, as previously described in the Baroque context. To substantiate the potential inclusion of these sculptures among the examples from the studied period, analytical techniques were carried out, such as optical microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry.| Date of Award | 9 Jan 2024 |
