Introduction: Dental implants are currently one of the safest alternatives for the replacement of missing teeth, when there is a correct diagnosis and clinical indication. However, some complications related to implant placement are described. Peri-implant disease is the inflammatory pathological alteration of the tissues surrounding a loaded implant and is frequent in oral and facial Implantology. Within the concept of peri-implant disease, two entities are described: mucositis and peri-implantitis. The peri-implantitis reflects a clinical picture in which, along with the inflammatory reaction of the peri-implant mucosa, there is a loss of bone support for the implant, which is clinically and radiologically evident. Therefore, the objective of this research project is to determine the effectiveness of Photodynamic therapy (PDT) (as a sustainable solution for the treatment of peri-implantitis through the use of porphyrins as photosensitizers and light-curing as light source. Methods: An in vitro study was carried out to evaluate the antimicrobial effect, to evaluate the effects of PDT using the disodium salt of Protoporphyrin IX (Proto IX) as a photosensitizer and the dental curing light as light source. Results: The adapted protocol of the PDT using ProtoIX and the dental curing light showed to be effective in the photoinactivation of C. albicans and E. faecalis. Despite lower inactivation rates, PDT studies on implants showed that it is also possible to inactivate these two periodontopathogenic microorganisms. Conclusions: In this work we demonstrated that there is an effective therapeutic approach to treat periimplantitis from PDT using commercial porphyrins already approved for clinical use as a photosensitizer and blue light source from a dental curing light. This blue light from a photopolymerizer is available in all dental clinics, the development of this protocol can be easily implemented in all dental clinics, without the need to invest in new technological devices.
