Abstract

Financial scarcity impacted many people’s lives during the pandemic. The uncertainty that thepandemic wrought manifested itself in different ways for individuals of varying power levels. One of the reasons why financial scarcity was so impactful was because nobody saw it coming. The pandemic saw a turnover of many jobs and a change in people’s futures. As a result, financialscarcity became rampant around the world, shaping individual mindset towards temporaldiscounting. This dissertation intends to study the financial effects of scarcity on cognition andbehavior of people with varying levels of power. I propose that individuals with higher power experienced less financial scarcity as a result of high cognitive functions, which decreased thelikelihood of temporal discounting in comparison to their individual counter parts with lowerpower. In order to test for this, I collected data, using an experiment. The results did not supportthe hypotheses. More research into this subject is needed before we can make an adequate conclusion.
