Abstract

The objective of this dissertation is to research on a family business if Familiness changes over time and how it is perceived by the next generation of owners. To test it, the applied methodology was a case study research on a company – Group Arié. A bundle of four distinctive capabilities were identified to support Familiness and considered as sustainable competitive advantages. By analyzing the behaviors of the founders and second generation along the company history, it has been shown that Familiness has been unchangeable over time and the four capabilities are as important in competitiveness today as they were in the early times. By inquiring the next generation of owners it was clear that most of them recognize and identified themselves with the four distinctive capabilities. However, they were not conscious of the importance of these capabilities as a sustainable competitive advantage.
