Design Thinking has recently emerged as a new innovation methodology and co-creation form that tolerates risk, uncertainty and failure by using designers’ sensibility. This co-creation form is recognized not only as an innovation vehicle, but also as a means of providing new models, to improve, fast track and visualize creative project and apply them to business planning. Previous work addressed the Design Thinking characteristics (e.g. visualization, creativity), which a good design thinker should have, as well as the ways of how it can be implemented (3 I’s model), and more generally the benefits it can bring to companies. However, it did not address the differences between Design Thinking and other co-creation forms. Besides, there is not one study in Portugal that focuses on the benefits of Design Thinking enjoyed by companies, which pioneered its implementation. The study is exploratory both in qualitative and quantitative terms. First, five pioneer companies in Design Thinking were personally interviewed, and afterwards asked to answer to a quantitative survey in order to accurately quantify the insights previously identified as being meaningful. Results show that there were benefits at three different levels: personal, team and organizational level. The proposed theoretical framework might help support organizations to embrace innovation based on Design Thinking.
