Abstract

Purpose – This thesis aims to understand how networks are built and utilized to overcome the challenges faced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the internationalization process. Methodology – The research approach is qualitative and explorative. A single case study is applied entailing eleven in-depth interviews both over skype and in person with five company representatives, in addition to secondary data sources. The company studied is WYgroup, the leading independent firm providing digital marketing services in Portugal. Findings – The study identifies distinct approaches WYgroup representatives undertook to successfully establish network relationships. Based on this, it is shown how the network was used to overcome the five major challenges WYgroup was found to be faced with during its internationalization process to the US. Research implications – While previous research used a macro-perspective on networks and solely pointed out the benefits for SMEs of being part of such, the research at hand applied a micro-perspective and investigated how these outcomes are achieved. Practical implications – The research offers first-hand insights into the magnitude of the effects of network embeddedness of SMEs and determines which capabilities managers and entrepreneurs need to develop.
