In a changing society, institutions, like Family and School, are subjects and objects of that same change. Being a part of the Portuguese schooling system and being in contact with the family as an institution, the discipline of Catholic Moral and Religious Education (EMRC) has an important role to play.The present work is dedicated to that role: starting with the intervention families have in the Portuguese schooling system, it verifies how families are, also, addressed by the different disciplines, with a special focus in the last two versions of EMRC’s program (2007 and 2014). After that, and giving special attention to sociological and theological reflection, a consideration about family reality/realities is developed. Finally, it presents two possible ways to a more profound approach to family reality in the 3rd Teaching Unit (UL) of EMRC’s 5th Grade: «The Family, Community of Love»
