The investigation carried out in this dissertation is focused on the restoration of a 16thcentury painting entitled ”The transition of the Virgin”. The artwork, from a private collection, was visibly damaged, had altered interventions and a poor conservation condition, factors that contributed for the decision of a total treatment, including support and ground and paint layers. During the restoration treatment was discovered an inscription on the back of the painting, making necessary the production of a structural reinforcement for the canvas, in such a way that it allowed the observation of the inscription as also, promote the physical sustainability of the painting itself. So, a semi-rigid and transparent lining system was developed, which addressed the case study of this research, giving a new contribution for reinforcement systems, recently initiated at the School of Arts, in the scope of an earlier master work. Thus, in this dissertation, the different phases of the conservation treatment are described, followed by a historical and artistic study about the subject depicted and the provenance of the painting. A material and technical research is also included based on photograph recording under different wavelengths, optical microscopy, Fourier transform infrared micro-spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray. Finally, it is discussed the use of synthetic resins for transparent lining, namely several epoxies and the polyester HB Polyester Cristal 2®. Properties such as colour parameters and chemical stability were assessed through a colorimeter and ATR-FTIR analysis on artificially aged samples.
