Tradução de terminologia médico-dentária para língua gestual portuguesa

Abstract

Introduction: Deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals have faced difficulties in accessing information in dental care due to poor communication between the doctor and patient, resulting from the absence of specific dental terminology in Portuguese Sign Language (LGP). Objective: The objective of the present study was to identify dental terms to be applied in LGP within the field of Dentistry. Additionally, the study aimed to develop a translation of dental terms into the same language. Methods: The work was carried out in three phases: in the first phase, a list of terms in each area of Dentistry was created, similar to a glossary. In the second phase, the existence of these terms and the congruence of their concepts with each dental term were verified using online lexicographic resources. In the third phase, a gestural terminology was proposed for incongruent and absent dental terms with the support of three individuals: a dental student, a dental prosthesis technician, and an LGP interpreter. Results: A total of 154 dental terms were obtained, of which only 23 had a corresponding gesture. Out of the 154 terms, 70 terms, which were not found in existing online lexical resources, were developed by three gestural specialists. The remaining 61 terms had no gesture, and 49 terms were developed in gestures. Conclusion: There is a lack of terminology in the health field, specifically in Dentistry, which compromises communication with deaf individuals in a health context. The creation of a dental terminology proposal for LGP will promote communication between hearing and deaf dental professionals as well as communication with deaf signing patients. The introduction of these terms in a 3D signing model accessible digitally will be a valuable asset in promoting communication between doctors and their patients.
