Abstract

Introduction: The expression complexity in Palliative Care, as been often used to classify palliative situations. However, it only has been measured by the application of factors of clinical subjectivity, variable among different palliative care teams. So that a trustworthy and homogeneous model can be established, that incorporates the concept of complexity in the several items of the palliative patient evaluation, and at the same time allows according to their complexity, the differentiated strategically intervention of the different technical and professional resources of Palliative Care (PC) in the National Health Service (NHS), a validation of a diagnostic tool – Instrumento Diagnóstico de Complejidad en Cuidados Paliativos (IDC- Pal) – was made, to integrate and objectivize situations and items of complexity, susceptible of appearing in terminal patients. Methodology: Methodological study, in a sample of 70 palliative patients, with a quantitative approach of data analysis. This study exposes in a structured and clear form, all the process of translation and linguistic validation of the IDC-Pal, according to the theoretical referral conducted in five steps: translation to the European Portuguese, retro-translation to the original language (European Spanish), translation synthesis by an expert panel in the area of palliative care and linguistics. Finally, we proceed to the pre-test and to the spoken reflection to obtain the last version of the tool. Conclusion: It is validated in Portugal the IDC- Pal (Portuguese version), allowing with this tool to establish the diagnosis of complexity in Palliative Care, and also according to its evaluation, defining the kind of differentiated intervention needed in the different resources of PC in the NHS.
