Abstract

This work stems from an eight-month internship, between October 2019 and June 2020, held at the Translation Body of the Diplomatic Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I choose to do an internship, and consequently to elaborate a report, in order to put into practice the theoretical teachings I have learned throughout my academic career, thus complementing my learning within the area of translation and its studies and practices. The aim is to present in detail the institution and also the working method developed, including the types of texts that were worked on and their translation processes. Since telework had its influence on the internship, due to the current circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was considered pertinent to include the various elements that differentiate it from face-to-face work in this report. In addition, during the eight-month internship the translation of the various documents was conducted with the help of a computer-aided translation tool, and so it is relevant to present and analyse the various aspects of the used program, taking into account their advantages and disadvantages. The institutional world and the diplomatic world that framed my experience as an intern were practically unknown to me. From the contact with these two realities and the knowledge acquired it was possible to draw several conclusions, from the way in which the translation activity is developed to the way in which the institutional and diplomatic translators are portrayed, with the whole process having its positive and negative points. To sum up, this report seeks to demonstrate that it was possible to explore, both in the practical and theoretical components, the various concepts and elements of the institutional and diplomatic world as well as the role that technology has within the area of translation. All this learning anchored in my own perspectives and opinions was essential and crucial to my professional and personal growth.
