Student thesis: Master's Thesis

Abstract

During the first half of the Master, in the SINV chair, I outlined the objectives of the “Final Draft of Dissertation”, at that time known as pre-project. The title chosen was “The way of life of the families with disabled children and their turning points”. When I started the exercise of social assistance functions in the CED A.A.C.F., I attended an initial training which was dedicated to the supporters of students whose parents would participate in the “XII World Deafblind Conference”, realized in 1999, in Lisbon, and organized by CED António Aurélio da Costa Ferreira, I heard that about 70% of couples with disabled children are separated. When I started the Master, I considered appropriate to renew the look of the pathway of life for the families of CED, the “moments coping, and turning points” and thus was born the theme of the Dissertation. Two specialists had answered to my questions, . Fátima Martinho, Master in Psychology, assessor of the Direction, actually is co-ordinating the Center New Chances and the professor Doctor António Rebelo who exerted the functions of Director of the CED António Aurélio during 12 years. And after seventeen parents. I was worried about couples separated in more than 50% of the situations. Some of the spouses, with the deficient child, built up the life, or in other situations the spouse who had not the deficient child. The loss in three existing situations in the universe of this study, was very painful. The deaths of these three students were moments of mourning for other parents and for the all CED. The fact that have been very painful for the three parents who have seen their children die, was not deterrent to give a fantastic change in the life, so a sister, her mother helping, is finishing the Doctoral Thesis and she founded as Association. Another mother finished the graduation in an Social Service, she opted for having another son who was born healthy. At present, she works as social assistant in an rehabilitation institute. The third mother (adoptive) is writing a book with the biography of the child.
