Abstract

We developed an exploratory qualitative study, focused on the transition problem for adolescence in families with a child with Trisomy 21 at this stage and the passage to adulthood, justifying this choice by the lack of studies in this area, and the need for an optical new but consistent, a trigger for succession of developments on the theme presented. In the existing research has been reported with poor frequency representations by some parents about the process of empowerment and scope of draft adulthood's own life of young children with T21, and the persistence of social deficits in these young people. We studied these transitions taking into account such aspects and especially from the Relational Symbolic Model. We sought to meet the following objectives: to understand family relationships in the course of these transitions, reflect on developmental tasks involved, and finally reach a mirror image of the family generativity. We used the phenomenological method in research in psychology, and as an instrument used the Generational Clinic Interview (Cigoli & Tamanza, 2009; Dubrovnik, Facchin, Molgora & Gonçalves, in Cigoli & Gennari, 2010), applied to three couples and that allowed us to access information about the origins, generative family legacy, relational aspects and generational passage. We conducted a content analysis on the path of intuitions and assertions of Laurence Bardin (1979). There is a family super surroundings attitude and parental over-protection for young people with T21, a difficulty in family processes of differentiation and relative decoupling, as well as individuation, and a family inability to plan and nurture concrete images on future, thus making it difficult to reach full adulthood by the youth with T21 and curtailing be familiar generative possibilities.
