Abstract

A transition to the circular economy became an unavoidable tendency since nature’s constraints and requirements impose an urgent need to change the current modus operandi, which has been predominantly linear focused. In this context, business models play an important role since companies are one of the main agents of change. Given the lack of the exploration of this subject in the Portuguese business environment, this study aims to answer the following question: are the circular economy actions implemented by Portuguese companies aligned with those believed to be the most effective for a successful transition? In this regard, public information of 20 Portuguese companies of different sizes and from distinct sectors was analysed, and then their circular initiatives were compared with those defended by the ReSOLVE framework as being essential to a transition towards a circular economy. The main results of this study demonstrated a strong involvement of the Portuguese companies with Loop and Regenerate key-actions and a great progress margin in terms of Share, Virtualize, and Exchange. Notwithstanding the constraints of the sample, this research suggested that the highest presence of circular economy was found in smaller companies and the implicit character of community awareness in achieving the five key-action of the ReSOLVE framework.
