Abstract

Supply chains are currently facing a series of challenges due to significant changes in the global environment. Supply chains are thus emerging as dynamic networks that require transparency, resilience, sustainability, and the adoption of emerging technologies to meet current challenges. The general aim of this dissertation is to investigate how these factors influence supply chains. The aim was to investigate the main determinants of transparency, resilience, and sustainability in supply chains, as well as the impact of emerging technologies on them. Subsequently, the challenges and opportunities associated with supply chains were assessed. The study follows a qualitative research method, using semi-structured interviews with members of companies from different sectors. Throughout the dissertation, the importance of transparency for traceability, cost control and regulatory compliance is emphasised, promoting consumer confidence and mitigating risks. Resilience is considered crucial for facing unforeseen challenges, emphasising the need for operational control and collaboration between members of the chain. Sustainability is emerging as a growing priority, requiring the alignment of economic, social, and environmental goals, risk management and a collaborative and innovative organisational culture. Despite the opportunities, companies face challenges in adopting emerging technologies due to the costs and difficulty of implementation. Finally, the limitations of this research include the small sample of interviews and the interviewees' limited expertise in the area studied. Areas for future research were also identified, such as the optimisation of delivery routes, stock management with a focus on innovative strategies, systems integration and data security, and improvements in the last stage of the supply chain for competitive advantage.
